Is Historic Houses membership worth it?

Historic Houses membership costs £71 a year for one person and £63 for each further person at the same address, read from the association's own join page on 15 August 2026. On this list it admits members free at 88 stately homes across 39 counties and all four nations. Across four visits that works out at £17.75 a visit, and across ten at £7.10.

It is a different kind of card from the other two. Historic Houses is an association of independently owned houses rather than a body that runs them, so there is no operator to read coverage off. Every house below was checked against its own page in the association's directory, and counts as covered only where that page says members are admitted free. 10 houses on this list are in the directory and state the opposite, and they are named further down, because they include several of the best known houses in the country.

What it costs

Rates read from Historic Houses' join page on 15 August 2026. The association prices a household rather than selling a fixed joint card, so a third or fourth adult at the same address adds £63 each rather than nothing. There is no monthly Direct Debit price on the join page, which both of the other two cards do offer.

What that is per visit

The fee is fixed, so its cost per visit falls the more you go. This is the number to hold against whatever the houses near you charge at the gate.

Where it breaks even

The same sum the other way. These are not the prices any particular house charges. They are a scale to find your own place on, once you have checked the gate price of the two or three houses you would actually go to. Privately owned houses often charge less than the flagship operators do, which pushes the break-even further out than the table alone suggests.

The two-adult column counts trips the pair make together, not tickets: one outing saves two admissions, which is why it clears sooner than the household fee suggests.

Against the other two cards

All three are annual memberships sold to the same visitor, so the useful comparison is one table. Historic Houses is the cheapest of the three and sits second on coverage.

Reading the coverage column as a ranking would be a mistake: the three cards reach largely different houses, and only 3 of the 88 houses here are covered by more than one of them.
